Baccarat Rules

This casino game is known for ability to intimidate players who are new to it. Once to basics of this game are understood. players quickly change their minds - it only looks hard. Maybe this is because baccarat has a reputation as a game of wealth and prestige, making it mysterious to some casino players. Whatever the case, now being played online at casinos, things are a bit different. There are two types of baccarat - mini and regular. Mini known in land casinos as the less formal of the two (lower betting  limits) and regular (higher betting limits) - where the whole wealth, formal attire,  and prestige issue comes into affect. Online, it makes no real difference - just how much you want to bet really.

How this game is played

Regular baccarat and mini baccarat have the same exact rules, but the physical setup, betting limits and and procedures differ for each game. For the most part, we will focus on the regular game for it should cover it all.

The regular baccarat table is about three times bigger than the mini table. This game typically provides capability for 14 total players at a time. On each end of the baccarat table there are 7 numbered positions. Each number corresponds to a player at the table. Online, sometimes you will typically see that these player positions are are numbered 1-15 - omitting superstitious number 13. AT each position, there are sections to place the three possible wagers at - Banker, Player, or Tie.

Typically, three dealers will work each table. This varies at online casinos, depending on the software the casino uses. The dealer positioned in the middle of the table is known as the caller. This person runs the game and makes sure all the correct procedures are are meet. Again, some online casinos use software that provides a different amount of dealers working the table (because software obviously runs efficient enough to do so), but we will cover the game the way it traditionally is played. The two other dealers , each working a side of the baccarat table, pay off the winning bets and collect the losing ones, too.

Baccarat ids the only casino game where players can deal the cards. The player sitting at the number 1 position is given the first chance to be the banker. If you don't want to be the banker, you can typically pass the honor to the next player in line. There is no real advantage or disadvantage to being the banker so it typically doesn't matter if you do or don't. You are not obligated to bet on the bankers' hand even if you chose to be the banker and deal. If you do bet, player you may get some flack for betting against yourself (online, who cares). Players that don't respect the randomness of this casino game tend to get you crap for this bet. Once a banker hand loses, the next player gets the chance to be banker and deal.

Okay, so you bet by selecting the designated spot in front of your section of the table. Bets made on the player or banker are paid at 1 to 1 - even money. If the banker wins, players who played this bet typically have to pay a 5% commission (check your online casino's rules on this) on their winnings, known as the vigorish. A tie bet is pays at 8 to 1.

After all the bets are posted, the player that is dealing gives each player two cards for each hand. The first card to be dealt is the first player card, and it is slid face-down to the caller. The next card is the first banker card, and it is placed face-down, next to the shoe that the dealer is dealing from. The third card (the second player card), is slid face-down to the caller. The initial part of the deal is done with the fourth card (the second banker card), which joins the first under the corner of the shoe. Then, the caller passes the player's cards to the player at the table who has placed the highest player bet. If there are no bets on the player - the caller reveals the cards. If there are player bets the player takes a peek at the cards then the player cards are returned to the caller, who places them face-up in the corner area marked players. Then, the banker cards are flipped over and placed on the area designated bankers. The caller determines the values of the hands and checks to see if another card must be taken according to the rules discussed next.

This casino game is often compared to blackjack because you are hoping the hand you wager on gets as close to to a certain total , in this game 9 instead of 21. In baccarat you are not playing your own hand though. You are wagering on only on two hands dealt to the entire table. More importantly, you have no decisions to make about the play of the hands in this game. The dealer acts according to predetermined rules without consulting other players at the table. Players can control only how much they wager and whether they bet on the player hand or banker hand. This comes in very handy to those of you are beginners to baccarat or are intimidated in any way. It takes a bit of pressure of of the new player for sure.

Card value are as follows. 2-9 count as face value. Aces are 1. 10s, Js, Qs, and Ks are all count as 0. When the total of the cards is more than 9, the first digit in the total is dropped. Meaning, all hands will have a value from 0-9. For instance, Q + 4 = 4.
